If you’ve been online the last few days then I’m sure you’ve come across someone on social media making Dalgona coffee (whipped coffee). A video of someone making this coffee went viral on TikTok recently and it has inspired many to try and make it themselves. Yes, I’m one of those many.
I generally don’t follow trends or try anything receiving a lot of hype online but I had to when I saw this coffee. Why? Well because I’ve already been complaining that I hate the coffee our Keurig makes at home. It’s simply boring. You turn it on, brew your coffee, add in milk and sugar and voila – you’re done. But It’s too simple for me. I generally enjoy a sophisticated coffee with a good foam on top and our Keurig hasn’t been doing that for me.

When I saw the Dalgona coffee through a video on Instagram’s main page, my mouth watered. It looked delicious and the best part was, I had everything at home to try it myself and so that’s what I did.
The first few times I made it, I made it wrong. I wasn’t whipping the instant coffee enough to get the right consistency. It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve been making it daily and I’ve finally perfected it.
Now before I get started on telling you how to make this coffee, you might ask me – is it worth all the hype it’s received? Let me answer that for you. Yes, yes, and yes! It is seriously delicious. It looks appetizing and tastes like a coffee that’s been brewed at a cafe. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend you do.
Where did Dalgona coffee originate from?
This question is arguable but many state it was originated in South Korea. Also, after much research, it seems that this is a very similar coffee to the au the Greek drink it. The Greek create a traditional drink called the Nescafé Frappe that resembles this drink a lot.
I don’t think anyone is 100% sure where this technique for making coffee was created, but all I know is I’m happy it’s somehow made it’s way into the United States. It is so easy to make that I can’t believe we haven’t learned this method before. Maybe one day it’ll become our national drink as well.

Coffee topping options
I love when a coffee has some sort of topping – it makes it that much more inviting to drink (and that much more delicious!). You know how latte looks so much better with the latte art on top instead of it just being a plain looking coffee cup? Well this is sort of the same thing.
Below I’ve listed a few options to top your coffee off with and even play around with the flavor. Of course you can always leave it plain, it’ll still look and taste good. But this section is for my friends that enjoy a little something extra!
- Drizzle caramel Sauce (caramel and coffee always go good together!)
- Sprinkle some cinnamon or nutmeg powder
- Add whipped cream over the top OR
- Sprinkle cocoa powder or cocoa nibs to the top (the nibs will add a crunch every time you take a sip, but I tend to enjoy it)
These are just a few of my favorite ways to top off a coffee. There are numerous ways to top off a good coffee, cold or hot, so don’t be afraid to get creative!
